ADVENTURE ITINERARY
Bush to Beach Adventure | Exclusive Tented Accommodation
Co-hosted by Blue Sky Expeditions & Khakibush with Bhejane Adventures
DAY 1: Into the Wild – Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve
Memorial Gate, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
We meet at Memorial Gate, the northernmost entrance to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. Our guide will brief us on the adventure ahead, explain convoy protocols, hand out two-way radios, and serve lunch. After lunch, we enter the reserve and enjoy a game drive before arriving at camp in the late afternoon. The coffee pot is already on the fire, and as we unpack, we can settle in with a warm drink and take in our surroundings. The evening is spent around the campfire, enjoying the first of many bush meals prepared by our chef.
DAY 2: Conservation in Action – Hluhluwe & the Centenary Centre
We begin the day with a relaxed, self-drive game-viewing session through the rolling hills and riverine valleys of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. Mid-morning, we gather at the Centenary Centre, an educational hub honouring this region’s pivotal role in the rescue and recovery of the southern white rhino. Here, we explore the history of rhino conservation, learn about game capture techniques, and hear captivating stories from our Bhejane guide about the work of the Rex the Rhino Conservation Fund — a project deeply rooted in this very landscape. His tales of triumph, challenge, and hope are both inspiring and eye-opening. After a relaxed picnic lunch under the acacias, we enjoy more game viewing en route back to camp, soaking in the magic of this iconic reserve.
DAY 3: Bush to Beach – Lake Sibaya & Black Rock
After breakfast, we leave Hluhluwe and head towards Black Rock — a coastal haven where we’ll spend the next three nights. We stop for lunch on the banks of Lake Sibaya, South Africa’s largest freshwater lake, nestled against forested coastal dunes along the iSimangaliso coastline. Listed as a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance, Lake Sibaya’s crystal-clear waters are fringed by pure white sand and fed entirely by runoff from the high vegetated dunes. As we lunch, we’ll be on the lookout for hippos and crocodiles — the lake is home to KZN’s second-largest population of both, and it’s a vital habitat for numerous bird species. We arrive at camp in the late afternoon with enough time to wash off the dust and sand before enjoying sundowners and an early dinner.
DAY 4: Kosi Bay – Snorkels, Stories & Scenic Waters
Today marks the beginning of our coastal adventure as we head to the beautiful Kosi Bay Estuary, known for its crystal-clear waters, powdery white beaches, and rich cultural heritage. We start the morning with a 3-hour boat cruise at 9:00 AM, launching from Lake 3 at the Ezemvelo Camp. The leisurely pontoon-style boat winds through the Kosi Lake system, offering sightings of flamingos, hippos, and a vibrant array of birdlife. There’s also an optional stop for snorkelling in the mangrove forests — snorkelling gear is provided.
Afterwards, we enjoy a picnic lunch, and the rest of the afternoon is yours to swim, snorkel, or simply soak up the serene coastal beauty. We return to camp later in the day to relax and enjoy a well-earned dinner under the stars.
DAY 5: Lala Nek to Bangha Nek – Snorkels & Sea Turtles
Lala Nek Beach > Bangha Nek
Lala Nek, a spectacular snorkelling destination, is our main stop today. Its warm, white sands and clear blue waters offer superb conditions at low tide, revealing rocky pools teeming with crabs, fish, anemones, urchins, and colourful shells. This abundance of sea life also makes it a great spot for surf fishing, with a safe shore entry. Birders will enjoy spotting a variety of marine and coastal species overhead.
In the evening, we head to Bangha Nek in search of Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles as they emerge from the ocean to nest and lay their eggs. This is a rare and unforgettable wildlife experience — a true highlight of the tour.
DAY 6: Tembe Giants & Tranquil Pongola
Tembe Elephant Park > Pongola Game Reserve
Today we head west into big tusker country, making our way to Tembe Elephant Park — a sanctuary established by the Tembe people, ancestral custodians of the land, to protect elephants escaping the Mozambican civil war. As we navigate the ancient sand forests and thick bush, we hope to encounter some of Africa’s largest elephants, including some of the continent’s last remaining big tuskers. Tembe’s quiet waterholes and shady clearings offer excellent wildlife viewing, and birders will be thrilled by the diversity of species.
After brunch at one of Tembe’s scenic picnic sites, we continue to Pongola Game Reserve, where our next camp, Mpalane Fishing Camp, awaits on the tranquil riverbank — a peaceful place to rest and reflect.
DAY 7: From River to Ridge – Pongola to Mkuze Valley
Pongolapoort Dam > Mkuze Valley
We begin the day with a peacefulboat cruise on jozini Dam, drifting beneath the dramatic Lubombo Mountains and keeping watch for wildlife along the shores. After packing up camp, we head to Mkuze Valley, a rugged and remote region of northern KwaZulu-Natal known for its mountainous thornveld, biodiversity, and cultural significance.
Our destination is Makongo Hills — a malaria-free, solar-powered eco-lodge within a Big 5 wilderness, located near the historic Battle of Maqongqo site. The area is committed to conservation, especially rhino protection. We settle into Inkululeko Bush Camp, where Bhejane once again takes care of tents, meals, and logistics. The afternoon includes a guided game drive, with the K9 anti-poaching demonstration scheduled for the following day.
DAY 8: Makongo Hills – K9 Unit & Rhino Conservation
Inkululeko Bush Camp, Makongo Hills
Depending on game vehicle availability, the group may be split to ensure everyone experiences both a guided game drive and the K9 anti-poaching demonstration. There will also be time to relax, birdwatch, and soak up the views of the Mkuze Valley.
One of the day’s highlights is a powerful and immersive K9 demonstration, led by the reserve’s dedicated anti-poaching team and their highly trained dogs. You’ll gain insight into the complexities of rhino protection, the bond between ranger and dog, and the real-world work of conservation on the frontlines.
Expect: Two game drives, a hands-on conservation talk, and unforgettable moments in the bush.
DAY 9: Farewell Zululand
Makongo Hills > Depart
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the wilds of Northern Zululand — a land that has stirred our souls and reconnected us with nature. With dust on our boots, stars in our eyes, and a renewed sense of purpose, we begin the journey home. There’s time for one last sunrise coffee in the bush, a few final group photos, and heartfelt goodbyes to the people and places that made this adventure unforgettable.
Expect: Golden morning light, warm farewells, and the lingering magic of the African wilderness.
